Wakomi among a crowd in Japan

About Wakomi

A companion for
visiting and living
in Japan.

Explore places, learn local customs and find help with everyday life.

How it started

It started with a letter.

A Japanese letter can be translated and still leave you wondering what it means for you. What is this? Does it need an answer? Where do I go?

The same missing context turns up outside the ward office. At a shrine. Before a first visit to an onsen. On the way to a place you’ve never heard of.

Wakomi brings places, customs and practical information together. You can browse a guide, save something for later and check the source behind an explanation.

Where it begins

We’re starting around Tokyo.

Neighbourhoods, gardens, museums and days out beyond the city. Alongside them, guidance for everyday life and a private way to read Japanese papers.

The first iPhone release is in preparation. We’ll keep improving the collection as people use it and tell us what’s missing.
